DALL-E API allows devs to integrate AI artwork into apps

Developers will be able to integrate OpenAI’s DALL-E 2-powered AI artwork into their apps through an API, incorporating its trust and security protocols

OpenAI has announced developers will now be able to integrate its DALL-E 2 AI-powered image generator directly into their apps or products through its API.

The image generations endpoint will allow users to create an original image given a text prompt. Generated images can have a size of 256x256, 512x512, or 1024x1024 pixels.

According to the company, more than three million people are already using DALL-E to extend their creativity and speed up their workflows, generating over four million images a day.

Trust and safety are a top priority

DALL-E 2 uses a process called “diffusion,” which starts with a pattern of random dots and gradually alters that pattern towards an image when it recognises specific aspects of that image.

In January 2021, OpenAI introduced DALL-E. One year later, its newest system, DALL-E 2, was unveiled, capable of generating more realistic and accurate images with 4x greater resolution.

Last month OpenAI announced that it removed the waitlist for its DALL-E AI image generator service, meaning anyone can sign up and use it.

The pricing for the API will vary by resolution. The 1024×1024 images come with a cost of $0.02 per image; 512×512 images for $0.018 per image; and 256×256 images for $0.016 per image.

All of this will come with built-in moderation, OpenAI says. “Incorporating the trust and safety lessons we’ve learned while deploying DALL-E to three million artists and users worldwide, developers can ship with confidence knowing that built-in mitigations—like filters for hate symbols and gore—will handle the challenging aspects of moderation,” the company said in a statement.

“As a part of OpenAI’s commitment to responsible deployment, we will continue to make trust and safety a top priority so that developers can focus on building.”

Microsoft is bringing DALL·E to a new graphic design app called Designer, which helps users create professional quality social media posts, invitations, digital postcards, graphics, and more.

Microsoft is also integrating DALL·E in Bing and Microsoft Edge with Image Creator, allowing users to create images if web results don’t return what they’re looking for.

Stock photography company Shutterstock, Inc also recently unveiled a plan to launch AI-generated content as part of its partnership with OpenAI.

The company announced that the AI lab’s text-to-image model DALL-E 2 will be directly integrated into Shutterstock in the “near future”.
