Intel enhance AI development with open source reference kits
Intel has announced that it is now offering a set of 34 open source AI reference kits to help developers and data scientists innovate faster.
The kits are being introduced as part of a collaboration with Accenture and aims to enable easy deployment of AI. Simplifying AI development for solutions in this way hopes to benefit several industries, including energy, financial services, health, manufacturing and telecommunications.
According to Intel, each kit includes model code, training data, instructions for the machine learning pipeline, libraries and oneAPI components to best optimise AI and make it accessible to organisations in cloud and edge environments.
Open source models encourage greater innovation
Open source AI tools ultimately benefit digital transformation, as it promotes collaboration between companies such as knowledge sharing, transparency and greater responsibility and education.
Meta recently announced the launch of its own open source model, Llama 2, stating that it is available for free for research and commercial use. Large companies working to release public AI models allow users and developers to not only build upon its structure, but also be educated and learn from it.
Intel is a world-leading company with a good reputation for AI development. Its AI and Machine Learning (AI/ML) department works to discover use cases in connectivity solutions and work to bring new AI-based services to existing Intel products.
The Intel oneAPI open, standards-based programming model uses components of Intel’s end-to-end software portfolio, enabling greater ability to streamline the process of introducing AI into applications. As a result, it improves performance with shorter, more productive workflows.
“Intel AI reference kits give millions of developers and data scientists an easy, performant and cost-effective way to build and scale their AI applications in health and life sciences, financial services, manufacturing, retail and many other domains,” said Wei Li, Ph.D., Intel Vice President and General Manager of AI and Analytics.

“The reference kits are built using components of Intel’s AI software portfolio and on the foundation of the open, standards-based, oneAPI multi architecture programming model,” he continued.
Paving the way towards responsible AI
AI use cases and workloads continue to grow and diversify, which leads to further questions about responsible use and regulations.
These types of conversations aim to lead to more impactful digital transformation, particularly with organisations like the UN security council having cited potential use cases that AI can have on a wide variety of sectors.
Intel’s kits will continue to be updated and have tools including visual quality inspection, enterprise conversational AI chatbot setup, predictive asset health analytics, medical imaging diagnostics, document automation and AI-structured data generation.
It aims to provide a wide variety of solutions via interactions with an enterprise conversational AI chatbot. According to Intel, AI reference kits can speed up the solutions process and help train models faster at a lower cost with little limitation.
AI tools and optimisations powered by oneAPI also aim to maximise portability for open accelerated computing applications.
